I know you're a smart girl, so you probably already thought of popping up different brands and timing each one for your answer. Science fair projects are about questions, but also about experimentation and observation. The best thing about using popcorn in an experiment is that you get to eat it afterwards!

Because the Popcorn Board promotes ALL U.S. popcorn, we can not provide brand specific information. And I don't believe there is one brand that would claim popping the fastest. "How fast" popcorn pops depends on how you are popping the popcorn (air popper, electric popper, stovetop, microwave). Further, if you are using a microwave, different microwave ovens will pop popcorn at different rates of speed.

POPPY DOESNT KNOW WHAT HE'S TALKING ABOUT. I WOULD DO POPCORN IN THE MICROWAVE. I DONT THINK ITS THE BRAND THAT MATTERS ITS HOW YOU POP IT.

Pizzaz, there ARE plenty of thing I don't know, but I do know that you can pop popcorn on the stovetop in as little as 3 minutes (if your pan is already heated--like if you just made one batch and now you're making a second batch, that second batch will pop up very quickly because your pan is already hot) which is about the same amount of time a microwave oven takes. Thanks for your thoughts!

To Cynthia and all of you who write asking which brand of popcorn pops the fastest: I don't know this answer. I've never conducted the experiment. But if you're writing about a science fair project that means YOU need to do the research and figure this out. I'm not trying to be mean or not be helpful, but the point of science is for you to discover what happens when you manipulate variables in an experiment. So, my best advice is to buy a few different brands, set your timers, and see what happens. You're the scientist here, and you'll have a whole lot of fun eating your results!

GOOD LUCK!!

My grandson did this as a science project one year....he had like 10 different brands....so what he did was to pop the same number of kernals and same amount of oil in the same pan.....overall.....most of the kernals pop.....some all popped.....some not.....but a majority of the popcorn popped very well and we also did a taste test and recorded our favorite brand....it was a fun experiment.

Try with Orville Redenbachers. I know it sounds campy, but their popcorn is really premium.

Or get different kinds of popcorn and pop them. Count how long it takes before you put them on the stove (or in the microwave) and when the popcorn starts popping. I mean, I don't know which kinds pop faster. There are differences in kernel size, in color, and in liquid content in the kernels (the liquid turns to steam and makes the kernel pop inside out to make popcorn.)

Try different brands, different colors, stuff like that. And make sure each kind is started and cooked under the same conditions. Like, start with a clean pot at room temperature. Add the same amount of measured-out oil to the pot. Put in the same number of kernels, at room temperature, and turn the stove on the same temperature (let the burner cool down between batches and use the same pot, lid, and burner.) You don't want one batch to pop faster because it had more or less oil or kernels or something like that.

I don't know that there'd be a big difference between them. But I could be wrong. So get poppin'!
